| The "Martyrdom" of "Abu Safiyya" in Afghanistan (a.k.a. German national Javaid Siddiqi) (December 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained a video recording released by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) paying tribute to a German national "Abu Safiyya" (a.k.a. Javaid Siddiqi) who was "martyred" in late October during fighting alongside mujahideen forces in Afghanistan. The video shows Siddiqi on the frontline along the Afghan-Pakistani border accompanied by other German recruits--and at a terrorist training camp that was organized last May. According to narration in the video, "Abu Safiyya, may Allah have mercy on him, died with honor on October 17, 2009. He died on the battlefield as a martyr.... [He] left in the spring of 2009 from his home country of Germany. He emigrated with his family to stand alongside the mujahideen carrying the banner of truth. After he was trained as a fighter, he took part in the jihad of Khorasan (Afghanistan/Pakistan) and he fought on three different fronts." You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| American Al-Qaida Spokesman Urged "Shooting Spree" at U.S. Military Base in 2006 (November 2009) In light of the Nov. 5 mass shooting incident at Ft. Hood, Texas, the NEFA Foundation is releasing an excerpt from a July 2006 propaganda video produced by Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation to mark the first anniversary of the 7/7 suicide bombing attacks in London. | Hakimullah and Waliur Rehman Mehsud Meeting Tribal Journalists, South Waziristan (October 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained a video filmed in occasion of Hakimullah and Waliur Rehman Mehsud's meeting with tribal reporters, on October 3, 2009. In the video, Hakimullah and Waliur Rehman, respectively at the helm of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and of the TTP's South Waziristan chapter, reiterate their unity of intentions and the group's principal aims. Following Baitullah's death in September 2009, Pakistan’s acting Interior Minister Malik Rehman revealed that Hakimullah and Waliur Rehman were actually competing for the TTP's leadership slot and that the two had shot each other during the shura meeting which had been called to name Baitullah's successor. Malik Rehman's claims were rejected by both parties in the following weeks, but it is undeniable that Waliur Rehman Mehsud, an extremely powerful aide of Baitullah, who had always opted to keep a low profile, has become a critically important leader, in direct control of the hardcore Mehsud insurgents, and somehow a contender for the leadership's slot. The meeting with tribal journalists was arranged by the TTP on October 3, 2009 in order to prove to the public that the two leaders were alive, well, and working together. Interestingly, however, Hakimullah appears extremely keen to reiterate the fact that he is the TTP's new overall Amir, while also continuously referring to Baitullah as the source of his legitimacy. In less than two minutes, Hakimullah mentions Baitullah as 'our Amir' no less than 7 times and his rhetoric revolves around one single motive: Baitullah's death. At the same time, Hakimullah is also clearly attempting to propose himself as a political leader, and not just a field commander. He repeatedly mentions the word 'policy' – certainly not the Taliban’s main rhetoric device - and opts to answer in Urdu, not in Pashto, as a Pakistani politician would do. On the other hand, as soon as Waliur Rehman takes his turn answering the reporters' questions, he immediately makes clear that the first shura held after Baitullah's death was the one that named him, in 'less than half an hour', as the Amir for the TTP South Waziristan. Significantly, Waliur Rehman mentions the other powerbrokers participating, Qari Hussein and Noor Wali for example, as to rebalance Hakimullah’s primacy. Waliur Rehman then proceeds to clarify that he traveled with Hakimullah to the Orakzai shura where the TTP central leadership slot would be discussed. Far from shooting each other, he appears to say, they traveled there together and once again, it didn't take more than 40 minutes to elect Hakimullah as the new leader, 'our respected Amir', in Waliur Rehman's words. In the report titled "Competing voices..." the NEFA Foundation examines the rivalry between Hakimullah and Waliur Rehman. In the following answers, Hakimullah makes clear that the TTP's raison d'etre is Afghanistan and that their sworn enemies are the Coalition forces across the border, not the Pakistan Army. Pakistan would not have been attacked if Islamabad had not interfered with the TTP's activities. "We don't want to fight Pakistan," Hakimullah states clearly, while referring to the Pakistani military as "our Army". In case of an offensive in the Mehsud areas of Waziristan, Hakimullah states that the TTP will offer "a tougher resistance" than in the past, noting that the military has never managed to break through and hold territory there. Notably, Hakimullah is keen to make it clear that the Pakistani and the Afghan Taliban are one entity, led by the Amir ul Momineen, while 'al Qaeda' is according to Hakimullah the label applied by infidels to good Muslims across the Ummah. According to Hakimullah's rhetoric, the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and currently in Pakistan as well, are all the result of the infidels' policies: Zardari, Obama, and Karzai are presented as Hakimullah's very own axis of evil. It is interesting to note to what extent the TTP leader is eager to include Pakistan in the logic of the wider Jihadi struggle, a world-wide confrontation between infidels and the Ummah's soldiers. In this context, the conflict in Pakistan's tribal areas is just an occurrence of this planetary struggle. This video conveys a particular importance in light of the ongoing military offensive in the Mehsud areas of South Waziristan where an operation involving 30,000 Pakistani troops confronting approximately 10,000 battle-hardened Taliban supported by a considerable number of Uzbek al Qaida fighters continues. The undated recording shows masked Shabaab commanders leading their charges under the official banner of Al-Qaida's "Islamic State of Iraq." Militants repeatedly demonstrate the tactics (and perils) of using "technicals"--civilian trucks and flatbeds that have large anti-aircraft weapons mounted on the rear. The video was released by Shabaab as part of a larger propaganda package titled, "Labayk Ya Usama!" ("At Your Service, O' Usama!"). You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| "Martyrdom" Wills of Suicide Bombers Behind the Sept. 2008 Terrorist Attack on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen (September 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained video-recorded "martyrdom" wills of the Al-Qaida suicide bombers responsible for the September 2008 terrorist attack on the U.S. embassy in Sanaa, Yemen. In his address to the camera, assailant Lufti Bahr--a former cleric at a local mosque--mocked, "O' American aggressors, we have come to know cowards, but we have never found any people more cowardly than you. For this reason, only a few of us are needed to fight you, efficiently, at a minimum cost… To further clarify and explain these words, we have decided to teach you a practical lesson with our suitable methods--suitable methods for people such as you who are in our land, by Allah. And this lesson will also be demonstrated in your own homeland-and soon, Allah-willing." Another Al-Qaida suicide bomber, Walid al-Gharam, offered similar threats of further terrorist attacks: "We are coming for you, not just in the Arabian Peninsula, the peninsula of Mohammed, prayer and peace be upon him. But, Allah-willing, we will attack the infidels everywhere, on any land and under any sky. O' America, we will attack you both inside Yemen and outside Yemen. We will attack you in Qatar and the [United Arab] Emirates and everywhere else. We will attack you, so be aware, by Allah, that we are thirsty for your blood and flesh." | Jund Ansar Allah's Abu al-Nour al-Maqdisi: Americans Should Be "Beheaded" (August 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated video footage of a sermon by the late Shaykh Abu al-Nour al-Maqdisi (a.k.a. Abdellatif Moussa), spiritual leader of the Palestinian militant faction "Jund Ansar Allah." During his speech, al-Maqdisi condemned the United States for "flaunting [its] power and making accusations of terrorism" and ordered his followers, "those who are infidels, they shall receive beheadings. When you attack them, do it ferociously-so it is the reward of the hereafter, or continued sacrifice, until the conflict ends." He also praised "this new righteous movement; this new righteous movement led by the likes of Mullah Mohammed Omar, Shaykh Usama Bin Laden, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Shaykh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi... This group of patient and faithful mujahideen will teach them that the believer would rather take a willing strike by the sword on his neck-a willing strike by the sword on his neck-than a whip wielded in humiliation." | Video of the Final Sermon of Jund Ansar Allah's Abu al-Nour al-Maqdisi (August 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained video footage of the final sermon given by Abu al-Nour al-Maqdisi (a.k.a. Abdel Latif Moussa) in the Ibn Taymiyah mosque in the southern Gaza town of Rafah shortly before he was killed in clashes between Hamas security forces and his militant followers (organized in a group known as "Jund Ansar Allah"). During his sermon, Abu al-Nour called upon armed Palestinian Islamists to travel to the Rafah mosque and support their brethren against the siege by Hamas: "all the loyal brothers and those who carry or own weapons, ammunition, and other equipment in the city of Rafah, and from the rest of Gaza Strip-and those who seek to become arrows in the quiver of Islam: Come forward with your weapons and equipment to aid the military leadership in the Shaykh Ibn Tamiyah Mosque, and declare your allegiance to this leadership." The Palestinian cleric concluded his sermon by admonishing his audience, "O' my beloved ones, it is just as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, may Allah have mercy on him, once said: 'Our approach does not accept compromise.'" | A Unique Look Inside the IMU's "Jundullah Studios" (March 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained new video footage of day-to-day operations inside "Jundullah Studios", the official media wing of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU)-an Al-Qaida and Taliban mujahideen ally fighting in pockets along the Afghan-Pakistani border. Jundullah Studios is responsible for producing several recent mujahideen propaganda videos of note, including at least two recordings featuring German-speaking militants fighting in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In contrast to the popular notion of "terrorists hiding in caves", this video reveals a significantly more sophisticated infrastructure, including at least half a dozen laptop computers, video players, and even a full-size office-style copy machine. Quite clearly, Jundullah Studios is broadcasting from a fixed location with a steady power supply, and-at least based on what is being displayed on the laptops-a relatively speedy Internet connection, as well. (Note: "Jundullah Studios" is featured in the recently released NEFA chart: "Prominent Jihad Media Organizations in Central Asia".) You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| Al-Qaida Says Two of Saudi's 85 "Most Wanted" Already Dead (February 2009) The NEFA Foundation has learned that at least two of those who have been listed on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's most recent roster of its 85 most wanted terror suspects may already be dead. Two years ago, in January 2007, family members of the #32 most wanted, Saudi national Sultan Radi al-Otaibi, announced his apparent "martyrdom" in neighboring Iraq: "Allah rewarded him with martyrdom five days ago (January 12, 2007) in the city of Baghdad during a fierce battle with American forces." Likewise, the #47 name on the Saudi most wanted roster—Abdullah Mohammed Abdullah al-Ayad—was profiled as a deceased “martyr” in a propaganda video released by Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation in early 2008. During the video, a masked man identified as al-Ayad was shown with other mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan, as he addressed the camera: “Praise be to Allah who freed us from our prisons and brought us to the land of jihad, after being separated by the tyrants. So, we say to these tyrants that, by Allah, your alliance with the Cross and your imprisonment of the finest from our nation are the weapons of the mujahideen… we know the reality of the tyrants through having walked the halls of their jails and into [the doors] of their intelligence bureaus. And, by Allah, this hasn’t weakened their faith, nor has it deterred what is in their hearts. Allah willing, you will witness that soon… For those of our brothers who are in prison now, by Allah, we shall not take any other action, nor will we have peace of mind, nor will our eyes rest until you are alongside us fighting in our jihad... So be patient, we are coming. And if we don’t succeed, then others will follow and climb over our blood and corpses. You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| IJU Releases Message From German-Speaking Militant (January 2009) The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated a new video excerpt from the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU) in Afghanistan of an IJU militant threatening in German to carry out revenge attacks on Western countries for the recent Israeli incursion into the Gaza Strip. According to the IJU operative, "Dear brothers and sisters, there can be no peace with the enemy... If we are attacked and killed, Allah willing, the Zionists and all of the occupying forces will be attacked and killed. That is the correct balance... Dear brothers and sisters, praise be to Allah, we have prepared some surprise gifts for the occupying powers this coming year." The German-speaking militant also boasted of the origin of his own uniform: "these clothes, what you see here, they are the uniforms of the U.S. military. Praise be to Allah, we seized these military uniforms as booty from U.S. soldiers. Allah willing, we, the mujahideen from the Islamic Jihad Union, will someday reach Tel Aviv, Haifa, Siderot, and throughout all of Israel and Jerusalem. | Video of Former Gitmo Detainee-Turned-Al-Qaida Suicide Bomber in Iraq (January 2009) The NEFA Foundation has released English-subtitled excerpts from the final video-recorded will of Kuwaiti national Abdullah al-Ajmi (a.k.a. Abu Juhaiman al-Kuwaiti). Al-Ajmi was a former detainee at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba who was freed from American custody and, undeterred, subsequently joined Al-Qaida's "Islamic State of Iraq" (ISI). In April 2008, al-Ajmi allegedly executed a suicide truck bombing on behalf of Al-Qaida targeting local Iraqi security forces in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Footage of Al-Ajmi reading his will and carrying out his suicide mission were later distributed by the official media wing of Al-Qaida in Iraq. The Kuwaiti is shown addressing the camera and declaring, "I thank Allah… who freed me from Guantanamo Bay prison and, after we were tortured, connected me with the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). And it is the gift of Allah to follow the path of this country, the Islamic State of Iraq... You may not see us again after this meeting because we are headed for Allah, and Allah-willing, we will enter the dens and the neighborhoods of those who have abandoned Islam." In the wake of the release of this video, the NEFA Foundation has obtained a copy of the transcript of the 2005 Pentagon Administrative Review Board (ARB) assessment for al-Ajmi. According to that document, “Al-Ajmi is committed to jihad… Al-Ajmi wanted to make sure that when the case goes before the Tribunal, they know that he now is a Jihadist, an enemy combatant, and that he will kill as many Americans as he possibly can. Upon arrival at GTMO, Al Ajmi has been constantly in trouble. Al Ajmi’s overall behavior has been aggressive and non-compliant, and he has resided in GTMO’s disciplinary blocks throughout his detention… Al Ajmi is regarded as a continued threat to the United States and its allies.” You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| Al-Qaida Faction in Gaza Claims Rocket Attacks on Israeli Targets, Including Ashkelon (November 2008) The NEFA Foundation has obtained a video recording from an emerging Palestinian Al-Qaida faction based in the Gaza Strip, Jaish al-Ummah ("The Army of the Islamic Nation"), claiming responsibility for rocket attacks on the town of Ashkelon and other Israeli targets on November 14, 2008. The video includes footage of the purported launch of the rockets, and a statement read by two masked militants in front of the official banner used by Al-Qaida's "Islamic State of Iraq" (ISI). The spokesmen indicated that the rocket bombardment, labeled "The Battle of Abdul Rashid Ghazi", had been carried out in honor of the late head cleric at Lal Masjid (a.k.a. "The Red Mosque") in Islamabad, Pakistan. Ghazi was killed on July 10, 2007 during a raid on the besieged Islamabad mosque by Pakistani military forces. During their recorded communiqué, the two Jaish al-Ummah militants also hailed the victories of their fellow "brethren" in various other locales, including Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. | New Video of Wanted German Terrorist: Eric Breininger (October 2008) The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated a video released on October 21, 2008, of Eric Breininger, a German convert to Islam who traveled to Pakistan and joined the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU). In the first half of 2008, German authorities warned that Breininger might be preparing attacks against German troops and buildings in Afghanistan. Recently, German officials issued a second warning that Breininger and his German associate Houssain al-Malla had left the Afghanistan-Pakistan area and possibly headed for Western Europe. In this new video statement, Breininger explains in German that he is still in Afghanistan and is not planning attacks in Germany. In an interview published on the NEFA site in June 2008, Breininger warned that "Germany—along with every other nation taking part in the occupation [of Afghanistan]-should expect attacks by Muslims." We will never forget their mockery of the best of mankind and the last Messenger. So, sleep with the thoughts of our swords dripping with your blood." He added, "I'm calling on all Muslims in the world to stand up and avenge for their religion, their books, their prophet. As British prosecutor Peter Wright has explained in court, "they intended to cause a series of explosions…by the detonation in flight of home-made bombs...The component parts of the devices would be designed to resemble soft drinks bottles and their liquid contents; batteries and other innocuous items of hand luggage." Wright added, "these men were…indifferent to the carnage that was likely to ensue if their plans were successful." You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| Video of German Suicide Bomber in Afghanistan Cuneyt Ciftci (March 2008) The NEFA Foundation has obtained footage documenting the first suicide attack carried out by a German national of Turkish origin in Afghanistan. The March 3rd attack targeted the Sebari military compound near Khost, along the restive Afghan-Pakistani border. Cuneyt Ciftci (a.k.a. Saad Abu Furqan)--a 28-year old German national born in Bavaria to a family of Turkish immigrants--drove an explosive-laden truck into a US guard post killing 2 soldiers. An Uzbek terror group, the Islamic Jihad Union (IJU), claimed responsibility for the attack. Ciftci had worked as a clerical worker in Germany, and was married with two children. He left Germany in April 2007 after formally deregistering as a resident at his local town hall. According to media reports, Ciftici was linked to Adem Yilmaz, detained in Germany in 2007 for plotting attacks against Frankfurt airport, Ramstein airbase, and other American interests in Germany. Ciftci's departure from Germany and his journey to the Pak-Afghan region was reportedly organized by Yilmaz himself. You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 9 or later.

| Video of Abu al-Laith al-Liby Supervising a Terrorist Training Camp in 2005 (February 2008) A new video is available from the NEFA Foundation featuring footage of senior Al-Qaida commander Abu al-Laith al-Liby supervising an Al-Qaida terrorist training camp somewhere along the Pakistani-Afghan border in approximately 2005. On January 31, the Al-Fajr Media Center announced that al-Liby had been "martyred" along with "a group of his brothers" on Pakistani territory, the apparent result of a U.S. missile strike.
